What does Net-Zero mean?
Put simply, net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. We reach net zero when the amount we add is no more than the amount taken away. In practice that means that the energy it takes to design and construct the building is offset by the energy saved in the operations of the building, generally with the use of high performance building envelopes and systems, and alternative energy sources such as photovoltaics (solar panels).
How long does it take to design and build a house?
The process varies greatly depending on many factors including, site, scope, budget, climate, time of year, labor force availability, and material selection. A design can take anywhere from a few months to a year. And construction timeframes can span from as little as a few months to a year. A good range to use for planning is 12-18 months from the beginning of design to the end of construction.
